Here is where to celebrate Lunar New Year in PDX

Feb. 17 is the beginning of a 15-day celebration of the Lunar New Year, welcoming in the horse year for 2026. Here is where you can get your celebration on in Portland. 

1. Lan Su Chinese Garden 

Lan Su Chinese Garden has become a staple in Portland for its myriad of activities every Lunar New Year. Portlanders can start their celebrations on Feb. 17 by attending their opening day event, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., free of charge. Additionally, the community garden will offer family craft activities, lantern viewings, lion dances and mini horse meet and greets

2. Chinese New Year Cultural Fair

Taking place at the iconic Oregon Convention Center, the Chinese New Year Cultural Fair is a great opportunity to experience tradition without leaving Portland. The event is put on by the Portland Chinese Times, a 29-year-old staple of the community. The event encompasses everything from calligraphy to martial arts, as well as more traditional New Year celebrations such as the lion dance and instrumental songs. The fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 28.

3. Lunar New Year Celebration at Washington Square

Washington Square and Explore Tualatin Valley partnered up to host their own Lunar New Year celebration. On Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event has a stacked schedule including puppet shows, a Yo-Yo Team and traditional dances. 

4. Lunar New Year Dragon Dance and Parade

On March 7, the Portland Chinatown Museum will host its 10th annual New Year Parade. The event is free of charge and will take place in downtown Portland, open to everyone. According to the museum’s website, the parade will begin in front of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association on NW Third and Davis Street in Old Town Chinatown. The group will then proceed through the historic Chinatown gates, heading toward SW Third Avenue, SW Jefferson, and Park Street, and conclude at the Oregon Historical Society’s Park Plaza.
